Conventional Direct Attached Storage (DAS) - familiar to many as a number of physical servers with their own drives and internal backup - makes storage management difficult. DAS results in 'islands' of capacity, with considerable unused space on each volume. Planning growth is difficult, and urgent capacity requests often cannot be addressed. Each server must be backed up separately, while recovery from tape is cumbersome and unreliable. There is little opportunity to realise economies of scale in acquiring and managing storage.
